St Albans Christmas bin collections 2026: up to 4 days late

St Albans City and District Council has not yet published the day-by-day revised collection dates for Christmas 2026. It has, though, already printed the shape of the disruption on every household’s 2026/27 calendar: collections over the festive period will be up to four days behind, and normal collections do not resume until Monday 18 January 2027. That is three weeks of catch-up, not the few days most people plan for.

The exact revised dates arrive late. Last year’s were published on 19 December 2025, six days before Christmas. This page carries what is fixed now, last year’s pattern as a guide to what to expect, and the date we will check again.

What the council has already fixed for Christmas 2026

The 2026/27 waste and recycling calendar, the one delivered to every household and available as a PDF for Week 1 and Week 2, carries three lines about Christmas, and they are worth quoting exactly:

• “Collections over the festive period will be up to 4 days behind.”
• “Normal collections will resume on Monday 18 January 2027.”
• “There is no garden waste collection service for two weeks from 25 December as outlined in the terms and conditions. The service restarts on 11 January.”

The calendar adds that “extra garden waste can be presented next to the garden waste bin on your first scheduled garden waste collection day following this period” and that “garden waste subscribers can also put Christmas trees in their garden waste bin for collection at this time.”

The bank holidays themselves fall awkwardly this year. Christmas Day is Friday 25 December 2026, the Boxing Day bank holiday moves to a substitute day on Monday 28 December, and New Year’s Day is Friday 1 January 2027 (GOV.UK bank holidays). Two Friday bank holidays and a Monday substitute is the worst shape for a two-week collection round, which is why the catch-up runs so far into January.

Last year’s revised dates, as a guide only

These are the dates the council published for Christmas 2025/26 (Revised Christmas collections 2025/26, St Albans City and District Council). They are not this year’s dates. They show the shape the council uses: nothing changes before Christmas Day, then every collection slips and stays slipped for a fortnight, with Saturday working to claw the days back.

Last year the slip peaked at two days for the Christmas week and one day for the fortnight after, and Saturday working on 27 December, 3 January and 10 January closed the gap. This year the council is warning of up to four days and a full week longer before normal service. In 2025 Christmas Day fell on a Thursday; in 2026 it is a Friday, with the substitute bank holiday on the Monday, so the pre-Christmas week is likely to be untouched again and the damage will land on the week of 28 December and beyond.

Christmas trees

Only garden waste subscribers get a tree collected from the kerb. The council’s guidance last Christmas was that trees “should be put into garden waste bins or left beside them on scheduled garden waste collection days” once the service restarts, that trees over 7ft should be cut in half, and that decorations must come off (Information for Residents over the Christmas and New Year Period 2025, St Albans City and District Council). This year’s garden waste restart is Monday 11 January 2027.

Everyone else has two routes. Take the tree to a recycling centre, where the St Albans and Harpenden tips both accept garden waste and are open every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, or book a charity collection. In 2025 the council pointed St Albans and Harpenden households to the Hospice of St Francis scheme, first come first served, for a donation.

Parking over Christmas, if last year’s concessions return

The same council page set out the Christmas parking concessions for 2025, which have run in the same form for several years. On Christmas Day all council car parks were free. On the bank holidays the Sunday tariff applied (£2.50 for 7.30am to 6.30pm, £2 for the evening, free overnight) except at Westminster Lodge and Verulamium, which charged their standard daily rates. Resident permit holders did not need to display a permit on 25 and 26 December or 1 January, pay and display and limited waiting bays were free and without time limit on those three days, and single yellow lines were not enforced for responsible parking. What is still to be confirmed
