St Albans trains to London: 21 minutes to St Pancras

St Albans has two railways and they are not in competition. The Midland Main Line through St Albans City takes you to London St Pancras International in 21 minutes on the fastest weekday train, and carries on under central London to Blackfriars, London Bridge and Gatwick. The Abbey Line from St Albans Abbey is a single-track branch that goes to Watford Junction and nowhere else, once an hour, and takes 17 minutes to do it.

Nearly everyone commuting to London uses the first one. This page covers both, with the fares and the season ticket prices as they stood on 10 August 2026, and the one thing that will catch you out at the London end this summer.

How long it actually takes

Times are from the published weekday timetable, checked on 10 August 2026 against traintimes.org.uk, which carries the National Rail timetable and walk-up fares.

The gap between the two columns is the whole story of the St Albans commute. The 07:33 runs non-stop to St Pancras and gets there at 07:54. The 07:37, four minutes later, calls at Radlett, Elstree and Borehamwood, Mill Hill Broadway, Hendon, Brent Cross West, Cricklewood, West Hampstead Thameslink and Kentish Town, and does not arrive until 08:12. Four minutes of waiting on the platform saves you eighteen.

What it costs

Thameslink is inside the contactless pay as you go area, which means most people never buy a paper ticket at all. Tapping in is cheaper than any walk-up ticket and much cheaper than a return.

The one to notice is the Anytime Day Return at £27.20 against £13.50 each way on contactless. Buying a return at the machine costs almost exactly what tapping in twice costs, so the paper ticket buys you nothing unless you need a Travelcard for tube and bus travel at the other end.

Season tickets

Prices below are Trainline’s quoted season ticket prices for travel to London St Pancras International, checked on 10 August 2026.

A peak day return on contactless costs £27.00, so an annual season at £4,588 pays for itself at 170 commuting days a year, which is a little over three days a week. Five days a week in the office brings the season down to about £18 a day. Two or three days a week and you are better off tapping in, or pricing up Thameslink’s Flexi Season, than committing £4,588 in one go.

Harpenden costs £424 a year more than St Albans City for a journey that is five minutes longer.

The Abbey Line

The other railway is easy to forget and useful to know about. St Albans Abbey is the end of a branch line operated by London Northwestern Railway to Watford Junction, and it has no connection to St Albans City except on foot.

Trains leave St Albans Abbey at eight minutes past the hour through the middle of the day, once an hour, and contactless costs £4.90 at peak times and £3.80 off peak. Because the line is single track for most of its length, there is no way to run it more often without rebuilding it, and the morning gap between the 08:23 and the 09:08 is a real 45 minutes.

It is worth using for two things: getting to Watford Junction for the West Coast Main Line and the London Overground, and getting to the villages along it. Park Street, How Wood and Bricket Wood have no other train service.

The thing that will catch you out this summer

There is no step-free access to or from the Thameslink platforms at St Pancras International from Monday 15 June until mid-September 2026 while the lifts are refurbished, according to Thameslink’s own service updates. If you travel with a pushchair, a wheelchair, a bike or heavy luggage, get off at Farringdon instead: it is one stop further on, it is fully step-free, and it connects to the Circle, Metropolitan, Hammersmith and City and Elizabeth lines.

Reliability, and what the council has done about it

Journey times are only half the question here. The council keeps a public log of what its MPs and its own leadership have done about Thameslink’s performance, and it makes uncomfortable reading: a written question to the Secretary of State about “the unacceptable service”, a letter to Govia’s chief executive on reliability, a further letter in January 2026 demanding investment after signalling problems, and parliamentary questions on driver recruitment. On 16 January 2026 the Minister of State agreed to fund the MPs’ proposal with Network Rail, and on 3 March 2026 the council leader met Thameslink over reliability, capacity, cycle security and driver recruitment. Parking near the station

If you drive to the train, the practical alternative is a council car park in town. The two multi-storeys at Drovers Way (351 spaces) and Russell Avenue (537 spaces) both charge £17.50 for up to 24 hours, and both now run ticketless entry and cashless payment only.
