Harpenden's Christmas Carnival runs noon to 6pm on Sunday 22 November, free, with the Farmers' Market from 10am. Batford and Southdown light up later that week.

The Harpenden Christmas Carnival is on Sunday 22 November 2026, from noon until 6pm, in the town centre. It is run by Harpenden Town Council, it is free to attend, and it is the biggest single day in the town’s year.

Three council events share that Sunday, which is worth knowing before you plan the day:

  • Farmers’ Market, 10am to 6pm. About 70 artisan stalls, local produce, street food and crafts, along the High Street
  • Christmas Carnival, noon to 6pm
  • Emergency Services Open Day, 1pm to 5pm

What the council has confirmed, and what it has not

The town council has published the date, the hours and the fact that it is free. Its own words are that the Carnival is “another exciting, magical celebration for all” and that everyone is welcome in the town centre.

It has not yet published a 2026 running order. There is no procession start time, no route, no stage line-up and no confirmed lights switch-on time on any council page. There is also no road closure notice, although the High Street has been closed for this event in past years.

Do not trust the listing that ranks for this event. Visit Herts carries a detailed Harpenden Christmas Carnival page describing a 3pm procession, the Town Mayor switching the lights on at 5pm, a Santa’s grotto, Imajica Theatre and Showtime Circus on the main stage, and the site stretching from Church Green to Harpenden Fire Station. That page is dated 24 November 2019. It is a good guide to the shape of the day and a bad guide to this year’s times.

The one detail that has carried through from that description to 2026 is the Emergency Services Open Day, which began as a joint event with Harpenden Fire Station and the St Albans and Harpenden Volunteer Police Cadets and now has its own council listing and its own hours.

The two lights switch-ons that do have times

Harpenden’s neighbourhood switch-ons are separate events later that week, and the town council has published times for both.

Batford Christmas Lights Switch On, Thursday 26 November, 4.30pm to 6.30pm, at Batford Corner. Carol singing by local schools, craft making and free refreshments.

Southdown Christmas Lights Switch On, Friday 27 November, 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Carol singing, fairground rides and stalls, a free Santa meet and greet, craft activities, and local businesses running Christmas offers.

Two other festive dates from the council’s own autumn and winter programme: a Christmas Sustainability Market on Sunday 15 November on Harpenden Common, and the Christmas Farmers’ Market on Sunday 20 December. Carols on the Common on Christmas Eve is a Harpenden Trust fundraiser rather than a council event, and it is free.

Before all of it, the Remembrance Parade and Service is on Sunday 8 November at 10.35am, marching from Rothamsted Park to the War Memorial for the ceremony, the wreath laying, the two minutes’ silence and the Last Post.

Parking

Carnival Sunday is the one day the free car park matters.

  • Lydekker Car Park, AL5 4JE, is owned by Harpenden Town Council and is free on Sundays and public holidays. It has 88 spaces and it is the closest to the High Street, so it fills first
  • Amenbury Lane, AL5 2HU, is the biggest at about 296 spaces, with 8 disabled bays. District council tariff, £2.70 on Sundays
  • Bowers Way East, AL5 4EQ, 148 spaces, and Bowers Way West, AL5 4EW, 158 spaces, both by the station and both on the same Sunday rate

The clash with St Albans

The St Albans Christmas Cracker is on exactly the same afternoon, noon to 6pm on Sunday 22 November, with five city centre roads closed. You cannot reasonably do both. Details of the St Albans event are on our Christmas Cracker page.

What is still to come

  • A 2026 running order: procession time and route, stage line-up, grotto times and the lights switch-on time. The council has published these in the fortnight before the event in past years.
  • A road closure notice for the High Street.
