The Christmas Cracker runs noon to 6pm on Sunday 22 November. Five city centre roads close, about 100 stalls, a free Santa's grotto and a Ferris wheel.

The St Albans Christmas Cracker is on Sunday 22 November 2026, from noon until 6pm, in the city centre. It is run by St Albans City and District Council, it is free to attend, and it is the one day of the year the council shuts most of the central shopping streets to traffic.

That date is confirmed on two of the council’s own pages: the Enjoy St Albans event listing and the Events Trader Information page, which also says the Cracker is the only street event the council is running for the rest of 2026. The Spring Festival, on 17 May, was the other one.

Which roads close

The council’s listing names five:

  • St Peter’s Street
  • Market Place
  • High Street
  • Chequer Street
  • Victoria Street

The wording is that they close “to allow for the crowds to circulate”, so this is a full pedestrianisation of the central spine rather than a single stage cordon. No formal traffic order or closure times have been published yet, and Hertfordshire County Council’s traffic notices for the district carry nothing for the date. Treat noon to 6pm as the event window and expect the barriers to go up earlier and come down later, as they do for the Spring Festival.

What is actually on

The council describes the Cracker as a family street event to start the Christmas shopping season, with around 10,000 or more visitors at its street events. From its own listings and its draft site plan for this year:

  • About 100 market pitches, selling gifts, decorations, jewellery, hats, food and drink
  • A main stage near the taxi rank on St Peter’s Street, with local musicians and bands
  • A school choirs’ performance area in front of the museum and gallery
  • St Albans Musical Theatre Company singing carols at the Clock Tower
  • A free Santa’s grotto, sponsored by St Albans City Centre BID
  • Fairground rides, including a Ferris wheel, marked on the council’s draft site plan
  • A climbing wall, arts and craft activities and street entertainers
  • Costa Coffee “Christmas Catch-Up” communal seating areas across the site

The lights question

Search results for St Albans Christmas lights will hand you dates from several different years, because the council’s older Cracker and switch-on news items have been unpublished and now return an access denied page.

Here is what the 2026 material actually says. The council’s own event listing tells visitors to “enjoy the festive lights” on the day, and the Cracker is described as the launch of the festive season. No separate lights switch-on ceremony, and no switch-on time, has been published for St Albans for 2026. If one is announced it will sit inside the Cracker rather than on its own night, and we will update this page when the council publishes a running order.

Parking on the day

A Sunday is the cheap day to park in St Albans, which matters when five central roads are shut and everyone arrives by car.

  • Most council car parks charge a flat £2.70 on Sundays and bank holidays
  • Clarence Park, AL1 4NF, is free all day on Sundays, but it has only 31 spaces and closes at 6.30pm
  • Drovers Way multi-storey, AL3 5EB, is the big one at 351 spaces. It is now ticketless entry and cashless payment only, so bring a card
  • Civic Centre multi-storey, off Civic Close, AL1 3JS, has 117 spaces on the middle level and 74 in the basement, and sits directly behind the closed section of St Peter’s Street
  • Russell Avenue and Drovers Way lifts run only between 8am and 6pm. If you need step-free access after 6pm, that rules both out for the end of the event

If you want to trade

The council has already sent out all stall allocations for the 2026 Cracker. Anyone not yet allocated a pitch stays on a waiting list, and applications are still open for that list through the council’s online form. Traders need public liability insurance, a short risk assessment and a photograph of their pitch or products.

The one date to note: the council has moved the pitch payment deadline to Wednesday 30 September, because invoices were going out later than planned. Wait for the invoice before paying.

What is still to come

  • A running order for the stages and the grotto. The council has usually put this out in the fortnight before the event.
  • A formal road closure notice with start and end times.
  • Any lights switch-on element, if there is one this year.
