No trains from St Albans City on Christmas Day and most operators stop on Boxing Day. The 2026/27 works list is not out yet; what closed last time, and parking.

There will be no trains from St Albans City or Harpenden on Christmas Day, and on Boxing Day “most train operators will have no service”. That much is fixed. What is not yet fixed is the part that matters for anyone planning to travel between Christmas and New Year: Network Rail’s list of engineering closures for 2026/27 has not been published, and the Thameslink line through St Albans was shut for nine days over Christmas two years ago. This page carries what is confirmed, what happened last time, and the date we will check again.

The quick answer

  • Christmas Day, Friday 25 December 2026: no National Rail services anywhere. Boxing Day, Saturday 26 December: most operators run nothing (Christmas and New Year 2026/27, National Rail)
  • The festive engineering period is Thursday 24 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027. National Rail says “full details of the major works will be published here when available”; the only closure named so far is Birmingham New Street (same source)

What is confirmed for the railway

National Rail’s Christmas page for 2026/27 defines the festive period as “Thursday 24 December 2026 until Monday 4 January 2027 inclusive” and confirms two things for every line, including the Midland Main Line through St Albans: no services on Christmas Day, and on Boxing Day “limited services from a small number of operators” at most. Thameslink has not been one of the Boxing Day operators in recent years, and its own festive page (Festive period travel updates, Thameslink) is where its Christmas Eve last trains and any reduced timetable appear once the plan is signed off.

Christmas Eve is a Thursday this year. Trains normally run to a reduced or Saturday-style timetable with an early finish; the exact last departures from St Pancras and St Albans are published by Thameslink nearer the time, and we will add them here.

The bank holidays fall as Friday 25 December, a substitute day on Monday 28 December, and Friday 1 January 2027 (GOV.UK bank holidays). Bank holiday timetables usually apply on all three.

What happened last time the line closed

The reason to check early is Christmas 2024. Network Rail closed the Midland Main Line between London St Pancras and Harpenden for nine consecutive days, Saturday 21 to Sunday 29 December 2024, to replace the bridge deck at Agar Grove and renew overhead lines south of Bedford. There were no Thameslink trains between Harpenden and London and no East Midlands Railway trains south of Bedford for the whole period; passengers for St Albans were routed via Euston and Milton Keynes with replacement buses (Railway upgrades between London St Pancras and Bedford this Christmas, Network Rail). The Thameslink core between St Pancras and Herne Hill closed on top of that from 25 to 29 December.

Christmas 2025/26 was quieter on this side of London. The works Network Rail and Govia Thameslink Railway announced for that period were on the Brighton main line, in south London and across Anglia (Engineering work over Christmas and New Year 2025/26, Govia Thameslink Railway); nothing was published for St Pancras to Bedford. So the line has had one full closure in the last two Christmases, and 2026/27 could go either way until Network Rail publishes.

The Abbey Line and buses

The Abbey Line from St Albans Abbey to Watford Junction is run by London Northwestern Railway, and its Christmas arrangements are published separately from Thameslink’s (Abbey Line, London Northwestern Railway). Nothing for 2026/27 was listed on 25 September. Bus operators publish their Christmas timetables in December; the county’s Intalink site collects them (Intalink). Parking over Christmas

St Albans City and District Council publishes its Christmas concessions in one news item each December; the 2025 version came out on 19 December. It said:

  • All council car parks free on Christmas Day
  • On the bank holidays, the Sunday and bank holiday tariff applied: £2.50 for 7.30am to 6.30pm, £2 for 6.30pm to 10pm, free overnight, except at Westminster Lodge and Verulamium, which charged their standard daily rates
  • Resident permit holders did not need to display a permit on 25 and 26 December or 1 January
  • Pay and display and limited waiting bays were free and without time limit on those three days
  • Parking on single yellow lines was not enforced “for people parking responsibly” on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day
